I first learn about world events from the news on TV or from the newspaper. If the event is a big world or national issue I usually see it on TV first. The stations use the bigger stories to draw in their audience and try to get viewers. Most of the time their reports are not as informational unless you are watching CNN, MSNBC or Fox News. Even those stations maybe one-sided on a story and have biased opinions. What I do is watch all the stations and see what the main purpose of the reports are. Once they start debating on the story I usually change the channel. I don't want to know and don't really care what the so-called "analyst" has to say unless it is from a relevant person. TV news is really what is the hot topic of the day or week. I prefer reading the newspaper or the news on the internet. The newspaper or news websites are more in depth and report on a number of events. I find that if the event has a significant impact on or to the United States the the story will be reported everywhere. If the story is not then we do not ever know about events that happen in other countries. National disasters will always be reported on TV and the newspaper but some things that happen in the current wars may not. Even when their are soldiers that have died the TV news just tells us the number of people that died and why. But we have to read the newspaper or go online to find out who has died and their will be a more in dept about the deceased soldiers.
I determine what is reliable by all of the media reporting on the event and if the information is consistent with them all. Most of the time I have to reassure myself by reading about the event in the paper or on a reliable news website. I usually see hype when the analysts start debating on a topic that is not relevant or has no significant impact on our lives. The analysts just talk about a subject to keep an idea going around or to attract the gullible people. I like to take in and watch multiple news sources and read different reports and articles because they all may have a different take on the subject and I like to have an open mind on how things are reported.

Happiness or Self-Respect
Happiness is something that we all want. We are able to live peacefully and are able to enjoy life when we are happy. But I think personal self-respect is more of what I want in life. If I am able to have self-respect than I will have the courage to do what I want. Having self-respect leads to confidence which helps people grow in a demanding society. I believe that happiness can come from self-respect. If we are not happy with ourselves and respect ourselves than people are usually miserable and hate their life. Having self-respect can lift a person out of a whole they are in. It can help them renew their lives because they will have the confidence to do so. As a person learns to respect themselves they will learn to respect others.
Happiness will come due to personal satisfaction. If we are able to live confidently in work and personal environments, than we are able to be more happy. Self-respect seems to always be a struggle for people. Many people seem to struggle, give up, and aren't happy with their lives. Self-respect will help eliminate the negatives in a person's life and hopefully help a person with their confidence. As confidence builds in a person they are more able to do things and are more able to live happily.
Personally I have a tremendous amount of self-respect and confidence. My confidence gives me the will to go out and do what I want. I am able to pursue things that I thought I would never be in. My confidence and self-respect has helped me live a happy life so far and I am pretty sure I will be happy for the rest of my life. I hope everyone can live a happy life. If you don't than I hope you can develop or gain some self-respect and go out and change your life. We all deserve a chance to be happy but we have to be happy with ourselves before we are happy with the world and our surroundings.

Nonverbal Behavior
Nonverbal behavior is a trait that we learn to use as we get older. Some people are excellent at using nonverbal behavior. They use their nonverbal cues to engage with the person they are talking to and know how to keep the conversation going. Other people are not as able to use their nonverbal cues and can cause a misunderstanding with the person they are having a conversation with. This can lead to an argument with a loved one or can put off people that may want to talk to you.
When I am communicating with others I use nonverbal cues based on who I am talking too. I do this based on a comfort level and I know when it is appropriate to show nonverbal skills or not. If I am talking to people that I have just met or if it is someone of an importance than I keep engaged with the person. I demonstrate eye contact, face the person as we talk, and have a positive demeanor. If it is a family member or a friend than I tend to talk to them casually and not be so engaged. There is more room to talk freely and have a more relaxed environment.
Personally I depend on the words and have an interest in what a person has to say. Compared to nonverbal cues I only rely on a person's tone. From a person's tone I can tell their emotions of the subject we are talking about. I can detect happiness, sadness, seriousness or sarcasm in a person's tone. Even if I am not engaged with the person, face to face or eye contact, I can detect their emotion through their tone.
I think my nonverbal behavior is influenced by my gender. I've seen that men are more likely to be lessed engaged in a conversation. We are more likely to not be face to face when talking to someone and don't make eye contact. This can lead to an issue of miscommunication with women, since they are more engaged with a person when they speak. Women are more likely to want a person's full attention and want to be heard.
That is only my opinion and their may be other reasons why we communicate a certain way. I believe that women communicate differently than men and there may be a certain disconnect between the two genders from time to time. There are just certain communication skills that each gender is better at and I think that we will always debate at who is better than the other.

Nonverbal Cues
Nonverbal cues that I project to others are my body language, the way I walk, my facial expressions, dress style and my mental attitude. My body language that I present is to be serious. I always act and seem serious and may put off some people because of my no nonsense style but I am a fun loving guy. Having a serious demeanor doesn't always say "hey, how are you?" but it does stray away the people that tend to push other people around. I also cross my arms with my serious face so it may look like I am not happy most of the time. But once people get to know me I am a happy, fun loving person who makes people laugh.
I dress as an athlete would dress. An athletic shirt with basketball shorts. I have always dressed like this, ever since high school. I was a baseball player inhigh school so I started to dress like an athletic type but I carried it on to now, where I am a baseball coach. I wear it to show I am an athletic person and have an active lifestyle.
I walk with a normal stride. I take my time wherever I am going, so I am never in a rush. I am not a tall guy with long legs, so I have to utilize my legs as much as possible. Sometimes I do waddle or walk at a slowpace but that is due to flat feet and old sports injuries that effect my walk.
My facial expressions are of a serious nature. I do smile but I usually have a serious, no nonsense look on my face. The seriousness was developed when I was younger and when I didn't have a lot of pleasent experiences in my life at the time. I didn't want to present myself as being sad, so I put on the persona of having a serious and mysterious lifestyle. But I have strayed away from being so serious lately to having a more fun and lively persona. I think laughter is the best medicine when a person is sad or feeling depressed.
My mental attitude is always to stay positive and to minimize the negativities in a person's life. There will always be negatives in life. We just have to minimize them and control them as much as we can, so it does not have a significant impact in our lives. I don't like dealing with people who are negative and degrading. I think it is not a good way to live. Negativity adds stress and I try to eliminate it by being positive or reassuring others to stay positive in a trying situation. Being positive always seems to be good for me, as it helps me deal with my emotions. I also stay positive when I am coaching. There can be times where players make mistakes and they hang there heads. So I tell them to stay positive to lift their spirits and their will be other opportunities to make a good play. We all make mistakes, whether it is on a playing field or in life, and we must always stay positive and hope for a better outcome or scenerio.

Globalization of English
What impact does the globalization of English have on the language itself?
The impact that globalization of English has on itself is that many countries have adoted the language as their second language. Many countries have done this because they understand that English is the ultimate source of communication and will help with their counties development to prosper in the expanding worlds. Countries have given up other second languages, such as French, and incorporated English to be taught as a second language in their school systems. English is being adopted by foreign countries to help communicate with world powers and have a say in global affairs with the leaders of the world, such as the US.
In the US, English has been the official language of the country. But due to the increased numbers of immigrants in the United States and the increased number of the Hispanic population, there are a number of people who are not being taught English or don't know it at all. As the number of Spanish-speakers increases in the United States, the country will become a bilingual nation. In the future, Americans might have to know English and Spanish to communicate wth one another in the nation.
How is globalization influencing the evolution of English?
Globalization is influencing the evolution of English by being the main language in foreign countries. Since the United States is the world super power, other countries tend to take on that nations official language in order to be more readily communative with the country. English allows the smaller countries to trade, buy and sell products with one another without having a burden in communication. As English is being more predominantly used in other countries, those countries use both languages to advertise and promote themselves. If a country may be dominant in two languages, a restaurant will have a menu with both languages to make it easier for the consumer to read and purchase an item. For example, in Canada, French is more dominantly used in their Eastern states but the Western states use English as their main form of communication. In the Eastern states of Canada, it is possible to see a menu in a restaurant that has English and French, since both languages are dominantly used. This occurs in other countries that uses both languages dominantly, such as France and Mexico, in places where the two languages are highly used.

Personal Wordage-#5
When I write an essay or story I like to make sure the reader vividly understands what I am saying. I want the story to be well thought out, informative and depending on the tone have a type of feeling that the reader can sense. In order for me to do this I have to use descriptive wordage. As I may call it personal wordage. I like using descriptive words to help the reader understand the context of what I am telling through the text and help make the interpretations flow better.
Ever since I was younger I was told that when using descriptive words, it should help paint a picture in a person's mind. By using these words, a writer can display a tone, setting and formulate the likeness of characters in the text. It is a process that helps capture a person's imagination and maybe they can come up with their own story. I like making a person feel like they are part of the story and as I read I like to feel as if I am in the story or part of it.
I feel that by using descriptive writing in my stories I make it my own. It is my personal stamp that makes my writing unique. I am sure I'm not the only one that uses this idea but it seems to help me come up with stories to write about and topics to discuss. I am comfortable using this technique. Sometimes I use big words or intellectual words to make the story sound smarter or well explained. I make sure that I am able to understand my writing and is visually intriging before I finish the work.
To be honest I don't write many stories or essays but that is the way I like to do them. Without being descriptive and informative I would not be interested at all. The attention grabbers are what I like to read and hopefully it is what many other people like to read too. The opinion of the audience is important because they are the people who are going to say if they like your work or not. If the work is not appealing than the writing technique needs to be changed or presented in a different manner. I like knowing the opinion of the audience as it helps me with my writing and helps me know what they like to read and what not to read.

Dream Speech Analysis-# 4
I have analyzed the "I have a dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This speech is an example of "langauage that inspired change because it brought the issue of segregation and civil rights to the highest degree in America. The speech was a launching pad to end segregation in the south and to make laws that would enable all Americans to be free. The language of the speech provided hope to all black Americans and show that someone is going to fight for what is right. The speech declares that everyone one day will be free and be able to live in a nation where there is only bias based on a person's character.
The location connects with the speech based on the presence of the memorial statue of President Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln abolished slavery and fought for civil rights during his time as president and during the U.S. Civil War. Martin Luther King, Jr. uses the Lincoln Memorial to symbolise who first started the fight for civil rights and where the fight for civil rights is at today. Dr. King references in his speech the Emancipation Proclamation which is the first legislature to give black Americans a right to live freely. The Emancipation Proclamation is the law that abolished slavery.
I believe that there would have not been a better location to give the speech. I think the location is symbolic and serves the purpose. Having the speech in Washinton D.C. is also a great purpose to tell the government what is wrong about the nation. Having the person who started the fight ( Lincoln) and the person who is presently (King) leading the fight for civil rights is a great way to show that anyone white or black have the same vision and same fight in them to make America truly the land of the free.
I think it is obvious that the speech changed the way people viewed civil rights. I think that if the speech didn't have an effect than we wouldn't have the freedoms and rights that we do today. I believe that there was more support from many people of different races after the speech. I think many white americans were afraid to stand up and defend a black american before the speech and didn't choose to fight before because they didn't want to be harmed by many white americans that opposed civil rights. However after the speech the number of people that supported Dr. King's speech and the effort for civil rights outnumbered those who were opposed and were able to change America what it is today. I believe that many of the people to fight for civil rights believed that in America this is what needs to happen. I believe that if we are able to set an example in our country to be free then maybe other countries will follow. We are still fighting the fight for equal rights but we will always truly be the land of the free.

Grateful to be Literate
Being literate is a skill that we all take for granted. Especially today, with the internet and cellphone texting, we have to be literate to function and work in our everyday lives. I do not know how I would survive being illiterate with all that I do online. I wouldn't be able to take any online classes. But being illiterate, I don't know how I would be able to take any class with all the reading with have to do. I realize that being literate is a very powerful skill that we very much take for granted.
I don't know how I would even be able to find or apply for a job. Applying for a job requires literacy skills. I don't know how I would be able to support my family and take care of them. I think it would be a constant struggle for me not being able to work or find a job being illiterate. I would have to solely rely on my spouse to take care of the family. Life would not be fun because I do read and write everyday.

Introduction Post- My Views On Critical Thinking
I personally believe critical thinking is the way a person analyzes something that it comes in contact with. I use critical thinking when I hear new music, watch a movie or when I watch a sports team play in a game. I will admit that I am a kind person and I don't really like to judge things. I like to let things be. There should be variety in the world and everyone is different. While reading and thinking critically, I like to be honest about my enjoyment into a story. If the story is not enjoyable and interesting then I shut down completely. I like work that has excitement and can be played out in my mind. Those are the works that I love to read. These habits I do apply in my everyday life. I like to have fun and enjoy doing things that keep me entertained.
I do follow politics and I analyze them all the time. That is how I determine if I am willing to vote for something or someone. The media I do criticize but only in the sports world. I don't want to ramble on about what teams don't get covered enough but I will say that some networks have a tendency to be biased. As for academic work, I really don't analyze it. I believe that if the teacher brings a certain thing up then we must need to know it. I will never question a teacher's reasoning to teach me something. Unless the idea has questions upon itself. Professional endeavors have always been a constant analysis for me. I have always questioned myself about my endeavors. If I am doing the right thing, on the right path, or will it benefit me later in life. I will just have to wait and see.
I am a pretty open-minded person, I don't know if this class will alter my thinking but I will know by what people think about what I have to say. If what I say is helpful or does nothing at all. By the end of the term, I just think I will have a better idea of what other people think. If I share the same ideas and likeness with them or if I have different opinions and views of certain things. I am looking forward to find out.
