Grateful to be Literate

Being literate is a skill that we all take for granted. Especially today, with the internet and cellphone texting, we have to be literate to function and work in our everyday lives. I do not know how I would survive being illiterate with all that I do online. I wouldn't be able to take any online classes. But being illiterate, I don't know how I would be able to take any class with all the reading with have to do. I realize that being literate is a very powerful skill that we very much take for granted.
I don't know how I would even be able to find or apply for a job. Applying for a job requires literacy skills. I don't know how I would be able to support my family and take care of them. I think it would be a constant struggle for me not being able to work or find a job being illiterate. I would have to solely rely on my spouse to take care of the family. Life would not be fun because I do read and write everyday.

  1. When getting this assignment, a lot of things popped into my head but I never thought of technology! Which is what our whole world revolves around today. Most of our communication in 2011 deals with text messages, talking on the phone, emails, and so much more. Most people access the news from the web now. If you were illiterate, you would never be able to research on your own. In fact, you would not be able to do most things on your own because someone would always have to be there to help you. I absolutely agree with you with not being able to support yourself or your family. Almost every job in the world would not hire you, and if they did, you wouldn’t be illiterate forever because you would be required to read and write at some point. You would also have the chance of allowing your children to also be illiterate. Children learn from their parents, and if you could not give them those skills you need to survive in our world today, you would be giving them a big disadvantage. Just for the pure fact I would never be able to read to my children breaks my heart. This assignment has made me incredibly thankful for literacy.

  2. Well I wouldn’t say we ALL take it for granted, but I would say a large number of people take it for granted. Personally I have never taken it for granted, but I am guilty for not appreciating it as much as I should appreciate it. You make a good point about being computer literate, as in the world we live in today, we are relying more and more on computers. People today must be able to work on a computer to be competitive in the job market and to make good marks in college. Imagine someone not being literate in computers trying to work in an office, where computers are used excessively. It would not be a good result as the person would hinder the office’s ability to get work done and thus not maximizing profits. As far as school goes, it is just as important to be able to navigate through a computer efficiently. This class is a good example of that, as all of the work is being done on a computer, using the internet. Even in classes that are not online, computer skills are necessary to prepare documents, communicate with professors, or receive important class updates. And just to sign up for a class, you have to know what you are doing, as registration takes place online. The reliance on computers will only increase in the future, so people must also take it upon themselves to learn as much as they can about computers, so they won’t be left behind.
